From the soil to your plate and beyond

healthy meal What can go wrong with our food, from soil to plate, and beyond?? Soil and plants should be treated with respect and not with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and other chemical products .

So when you go shopping, shop "organic". Not only the earth will thank you, your body will too.

It is difficult to avoid plastics as wrapping or storage container. In order to avoid getting chemicals into your food, the safest plastics are:

*(HDPE) is recyclable and durable

*(PET or PETE) containers are recyclable and a good single use plastic, but shouldn’t be reused.

*(LDPE) is a food-safe plastic, used to make food wraps and plastic bags.

*(PP) is less recyclable, but has not been shown to leach carcinogens or endocrine disruptors.

Avoid these plastics for your heath and the environment:

*polycarbonate, contains bisphenol-A, a hormone disruptor, that may leach. Nalgene sports bottles and some baby bottles are polycarbonate.

*(PVC) releases carcinogenic dioxins into the environment when manufactured/incinerated and can leach phthalates.

*(PS)can leach styrene, a possible human carcinogen

Once at home, try to store in glass, stainless or ceramic container (with eventually a plastic lid).

While preparing food (healthy food of course), try to be creative: you can cook, fry, sautee, steam, pickle and much more, and also change sometimes the kind of vegetables:

*the cabbage family: broccoli, white cabbage, Napa cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower,Brussels sprouts, rapeseed, common radish, horseradish and many others.

*root vegetables: carrots, daikon, turnip, red beets, salsifis etc..

*leafy green vegeatbles: lettuce, artichoke, endives, etc..

of course, most veggies (and fruits) should be locally grown.

We do not advocate the use of animal products as food, and we avoid microwave at all costs.

Dont use aluminium pots and pans or Tefal/Teflon or any other coated kitchenware. The best quality pots and pans are made either from stainless steel (18/10),glass or cast iron.

Ok so we bought and prepared food, now lets have dinner.

Before your meal, have a minute of silence, in order to focus on your food, and get stress out of our system. You eat at a table , and not on a couch and surely not while watching TV, as your food needs your attention.

Chewing is enormously underrated, nobody chews enough, so take your time for your meal: the better you chew , the better you will digest and the more essential nutritients will be available for you.

Do not drink during , just before or just after your meal: drinks will dillute the digestive juices in your stomach, making digestion slower.

Dont eat too hot or too cold foods, dont use agressive detergents to wash your dishes and do rince your plates very well.

Of course there are many more rules to follow if you want to improve your health.

Perhaps those are a bit too many "dont's" for you, see here a last one: dont get sick; as your health is in your own hands, you cannot blame it to someone else.
