I asked my friend Rob what he considers the main difference between the Japanese Shiatsu massage and the Thai traditional massage and he answered me this:
" Both systems are energy based: Shiatsu working with the meridians and Thai Massage with the Sen lines.

Shiatsu (from shi -meaning finger- and atsu -meaning pressure-) is the Japanese massage based on accupuncture and is effective in healing and mentaining physical health.
Shiatsu is regulated as a licensed medical therapy in Japan by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and elsewhere by various governing bodies set up by Shiatsu practitioners.
Tuina is the hands-on-body treatment using acupressure that is a modality of Chinese medicine whose purpose is to bring the body into balance.
